What is Nitrous Oxide

Before getting into how nitrous oxide relates to cars, first it is imperative to have a fundamental understanding of nitrous oxide. N20, as nitrous oxide is also referred to, is a chemical compound composed of two nitrogen for every one oxygen.

What Nitrous Oxide Do and Its Relationship with Cars

In terms of cars, nitrous oxide adds horsepower by helping let more air into a car's combustion chamber. Without getting too descriptive using chemistry, nitrous oxide and the intake's air meet, resulting in the N20 making the air more dense by cooling the air's charge. Because the air is denser, the air now takes up less air than before. With more air now capable of moving through the engine, the car is capable of creating more horsepower.

Nitrous Oxide Systems

Nitrous oxide systems come in a variety of systems for cars. Two such systems are the dry and wet systems. The dry system does not require the nitrous kit to add more fuel. Rather, the extra fuel needed to combine with N20's oxygen molecules is provided by a car's fuel injectors. For older cars which use carburetors, a wet system may be more appropriate. Not only is a wet system simpler to install than a dry system, but also combines the car's fuel and the N20's nitrous at a singular shared point in the system.
